I am constantly asked about Las Vegas, the best things to see, where to stay, what to do, etc… So I’ve decided to write some tips and tricks, which I’ll add to as time goes on.
Getting Around
- Taxis are very expensive, especially if you want to see the sights. It could cost you $15 each way. It really adds up.
- If you take a taxi, beware of cabbies offering you “free” or “cheap” nightclub/stripclub passes. Some are bogus or expired. Don’t buy from cabbies.
- Taxi lines on weekends can be long and will waste your time. It’s not as bad now with the bad economy, but it still gets busy.
- My advice is to rent a car through Thrifty.com – the cheapest and best in Vegas. (When you select a vehicle, you will usually get one upgrade, so keep that in mind) I pay about $14 per day through Thrifty.
- If renting a car, be sure to take your time and carefully check your car for scratches and dings before you leave the rental car garage. If is dark in the garage and you may not notice a crack in the windshield or a scratch until later. Unless you note it on the inspection report, you may be held responsible. I’ve found plenty of window cracks, dings and missing car parts after the fact. So far, I’m lucky, but now I take extra time to inspect. I once drove a car out of the garage that had the paint “keyed” out without noticing it in the garage. Only days later did I realize.
The great thing about Las Vegas is that there is so much to do besides gamble. Your best bet is to Google for any information of the following things (Links change too often to keep current) . The following list gives you an idea if you’ve never been there. It certainly is not an all-inclusive guide.
I have not included most clubs and lounges, as there are too many to list and they are ever-changing. But if you have kids and want a night out, be sure to check out Palms and Red Rock Casino, as they both are top-nightlife spots and have a Kids Quest for your child (up to age 12).

I have finally been introduced me to the wonderful world of valet parking, especially in Las Vegas. Most times, it’s much easier and faster than parking your car yourself. In Vegas, and perhaps in many places, valet parking is free. You just tip the attendant a few bucks and you’re set. When you arrive to the hotel, just follow the signs, they open your door and give you a ticket. When you are ready to pick up your car, just give your ticket, sit under the cool mist, and wait a few minutes. This is what I became used to. Now, you would expect that the more exclusive the hotel, the better service you will receive. And that’s certainly what I expected when I arrived at the Venetian, one of the most luxurious hotels in Las Vegas. Boy, was i wrong.
